pros and cons of potong pasir

When me and peers took a walk around Potong Pasir ,there was a lot to see and talk about. We will be talking about the good and bad sides of Potong Pasir ,starting off with the good news.

As we were observing the area, the immediate sighting  of the river caught our attention. The river is a good source for recreational activities and water sports, such as sailing. When walking by the buildings we all noticed that they were of a unique design. They were arranged at a specific angle so that they would curve slightly,to give a Potong Pasir feel.A good school such as Saint Andrew’s is also located in the premises. This allows the parents to have a peace in mind when deciding the school for their child.Potong Pasir also provides to the needs of the Indian residents as the have a temple at the heart of Potong Pasir. The temple is the also the temple of one of the important Indian gods, this means during auspicious occasions people from all over Singapore come to the temple to get blessing from the god. With the residents living near the area,it saves them the journey of travel.  The blueprint of Potong Pasir is also something to be appreciated as we can see that it took a long time of planning to finish ,we can prove that as the building’s structure and design did not come fast, it must have taken at least a few years. The community centre is also a socialization hub for people as it brings people from all walks of life together through games like soccer and basketball, from the young to the adolescents to the young at heart. The community centre also provides to the needs of the elderly living in that area by providing free classes for them to bond and socialize.Getting to make friends at this time of their lives is essential for their well being of the elderly,as they will not feel lonely most of the time.Shops in that area comply to the needs of people with different amount of incomes, there are a few shops that sell cheap items, while there are others who sell slightly more expensive items. The fast food variety is also one to be recognized as it has two of the most popular fast food restaurants in Singapore,KFC and Mac Donalds. This means that residents could just walk a few phases to feel their stomach’s  desires. It has the facilities of any means of transport by providing bus, taxi and MRT services. This would ease the travel of the residents living in that area. The eye catching transport that lifts Potong Pasir above the rest of the estates in Singapore,is the Potong Pasir MRT station . It also provides to the needs of the young residents as it has a playground with a design that not many can find in the other parts of Singapore, this gives it a slight edge among other neighbourhoods. The houses are also of different range as it has HDBs and private apartments to condominiums  around the area, this gives families with different incomes brighter opportunities to live in Potong Pasir. All in all I think the amenities are one of the best I have seen.

Now I will be talking about the bad things about Potong Pasir.

The condominiums living in the area near the school may be disturbed of their sleep due to the morning assembly of both the secondary school and the primary school.Due to the loud sounding of the school bell the residents may find it hard to get some sleep and may be irritated or forced to wake up in the morning. Also noise caused by the school students may be disturbing as residents living near the school may have a hard time getting an afternoon nap.Students from nearby schools may cause mischief to the surroundings and also disturb the residents. This may lead to residents not having a relaxing time at home. The nearby food area will also be used by the students and this may cause inconvenience to the residents who want to buy food. This may lead restaurant owners into having a nightmare and students may also cause havoc. The area around Potong Pasir is also not that heavily sheltered and when there is a heavy downpour the public in the area may get caught in the rain. Most roads in the area are also singled lined and when parents are waiting to fetch their child after school  tend to park on the lane, making it difficult for cars or busses to drive. This may cause congestion in the afternoons making it difficult for residents to drive. The MacDonald’s is a 24 hours one, this may be used to the advantage of gangs, they may use it as a location to meet up.This may cause disturbance to the society.Futher more the Potong Pasir area is in the opposition side, and not under the ruling party,PAP.It is under the rule of the Singapore People’s Party  lead by Mr.Chiam See Tong. This means that the government will not fund any renovations for the area. This may be a set back towards the residents as the government is not funding their area with new stuff and upgrading. This is why the neighbourhood of Potong Pasir has a very old look to it,as it has not been through much upgrading. As the residents may not choose to live in that area just because their in the opposition side and may choose to move to another place to live.Further more not all the HDB houses in the area have lift excess to all levels.Residents who plan to live there or are already staying there, may have an eerie feeling or may feel uncomfortable at night as there used to be a cemetery near the area. This may make the people living in the area to be scared of the area.Further more religious families may not want to live in the area due to their superstitious believes.

When my group interviewed their family and friends on their impressions on Potong Pasir, most of them could tell a pro and con.The most common prose they could give was the fast food restaurants, and the ever popular Potong Pasir MRT.However the one common con that was repeatedly said was that the are was more or less that it looks run downed and there is no excess to lifts from all the levels. As a group of school students from Saint Andrews School,we always visit Potong Pasir, our view is that Potong Pasir is not a bad place to live, somewhere our group would wants to stay due to the facilities, but that is just our point of view.
