Potong Pasir is located in the central region of Singapore between Toa Payoh and Sennett Estate. Potong Pasir actually means 'cut sand' in the Malay language. It probably got its name because it was once occupied by sand-quarries. Other than being famous for its unique flats with the slanted roof, there are many more things that Potong Pasir has to offer when it comes to living.
There are many benefits to living in this quaint part of Singapore, such as the Potong Pasir MRT which is just a stone's throw away from the homes there. The MRT station is underground, hence the houses can maintain their privacy and noise levels are kept to a minimum.
St Andrew's School is also part of the neighbourhood. This is either a good or bad thing. If residents have children (especially boys), St Andrew's School is just a few minutes walk away. Its campus provides education from Pre-School to Junior College, St Andrew's School also provides an all-rounded education focusing not only on academics, but also on moral values, the Arts as well on excellence in the sporting area. As the saying goes "boys will be boys", hence residents would have to put up with some of the student's irresponsible, reckless and boisterous behaviour.
There is also a Hindu Temple, Mosque and a few churches, all within the Potong Pasir area. However, amenities in the town are still relatively basic. There are no sophisticated shopping malls or restaurants near by. For food choices, there are a few variety such as a coffeshop, KFC ( Kentucky Fried Chicken), a Bubble Tea store etc. Other amenities such as a barber shop, a small wet market, a One Dollar Value shop, a park and a community centre which has basketball courts, an archery range, street soccer court and a badminton court for the public's use. The Kallang River also cuts through Potong Pasir, making the neighbourhood even more beautiful and serene.
Now for our verdict on living in Potong Pasir. It is truly a place where you can escape from the hussle and bustle of Singapore, and experience tranquility, yet being within reach of the city and other facilities nearby.
